Christ's College

A major street running past Christ's and Emmanuel Colleges, with big shops and a branch of Hobson's Conduit.
This is one of the main streets of the centre, running south-east from Sidney Street and Hobson Street towards Regent Street, with Downing Street leading away westwards. Two colleges front the north-eastern side, Christ's and Emmanuel. Across the road are the church of St Andrew the Great and a Baptist church.
Retail is a big part of the street. The Robert Sayle department store traded here from 1840 to 2004, and the Grand Arcade shopping mall has stood since 2008. John Lewis has occupied the old department store site since 2007.
A branch of Hobson's Conduit reached the street in 1631, bringing a supply of water. The channel started at the conduit head, ran down Lensfield Road and through St Andrew's Street, and made for Drummer Street. There it divided, with one feed for each of the two colleges and another for a point where the public could draw water. In 1996, pedestrian improvements led to most of the open channel being covered over.
In October 2010, engineers working on what was thought to be a collapsed sewer under the road found a man-made chamber about 9 metres deep and 6 metres long. An Anglian Water spokesman said it appeared to have been dug recently, and the cause was investigated. One possible explanation is an abandoned telecommunications vault dating from the building work of 2007-08.
