Grand Arcade is a covered shopping centre on St Andrew's Street, in the middle of Cambridge. Its own site lists about 60 shops and restaurants on two floors lit from above by a glazed roof. The anchor is the John Lewis department store, formerly Robert Sayle.

How it came about

John Lewis reopened on 8 November 2007 after a major rebuild, and the rest of the centre opened on 27 March 2008. The site covers 2.8 hectares, and the centre's own site calls the scheme "the single largest redevelopment ever undertaken within the historic heart of the city", with "one of the largest archaeological digs to take place in Cambridge".

Layout and neighbours

Grand Arcade joins Lion Yard directly, and the old Lion Yard car park was pulled down and rebuilt as part of the new scheme. A council-run multi-storey car park sits beside the centre. The Grafton Centre, the city's other large covered mall, is a ten-minute walk away. Cambridge Market on Market Hill is close by.

Practical notes

Centre hours are 09:00-18:00 Monday to Saturday and 11:00-17:00 on Sunday, with later closing on some days in November and December. Individual shops may keep different hours, so check the store page before a special trip. The centre's own site describes a walk of about 15 minutes from the railway station, and the bus interchange between Downing Street and Emmanuel Street is a short walk from the entrance.
