St Mary's Street runs between Market Hill and the place where King's Parade becomes Trinity Street. Past the square it carries on as Market Street. The street lies in the heart of the University area, where many of the oldest colleges are found.

The University Church and Senate House

Directly to the south stands the University Church (St Mary the Great), which names the street. To the west is the Senate House, the venue for graduation. A pedestrian-only route, St Mary's Passage, runs south of the church and gives a second link between Market Hill and King's Parade.

The University treats the Old Schools, together with the Senate House and the church, as a single Old Schools Site that includes the street and the passage. The Proctors' Office is at number 1, along the passage's southern edge.

Bookselling on the corner

Bookselling has gone on since 1581 at the corner plot, 1 Trinity Street. Bowes & Bowes, a firm that could lay claim to being Britain's oldest bookshop, shut up shop there in 1986. Sherratt & Hughes took over and itself closed in 1992, after which the site became the Cambridge University Press bookshop.
