Cambridge University Real Tennis Club
A Grade II listed real tennis court of 1866 on Grange Road, one of the few left in the United Kingdom.
A near-mile-long north-south road of 17th-century origin, lined with colleges, a rugby ground and the University Library.
Grange Road runs north to south for almost a mile, joining Madingley Road at a T-junction in the north and Barton Road in the south. It runs roughly alongside the River Cam, which lies to the east. The road goes back to the 17th century, when it gave horse-drawn carriages a way round the western side of the town, and it has been rebuilt repeatedly since.
Several colleges front the road or keep sites on it. Selwyn College and Newnham College both face Sidgwick Avenue. Robinson College stands on Grange Road itself and Clare Hall fronts onto Herschel Road. Corpus Christi College, St Catharine's College and St John's College have student rooms, a playing field or gardens nearby. Selwyn and Newnham have both enlarged their main sites in recent years.
The Cambridge University Library, designed by Giles Gilbert Scott, has its main building, archives and tower here. King's College School sits just off the road on West Road, and St John's College School is on Grange Road.
Sport takes up much of the frontage. Opposite Selwyn, the university's rugby union club stages both rugby and American football matches, and the university real tennis club is close by. Tyndale House, a biblical research institute and library, is reached from Selwyn Gardens.
