The Regal is at 38-39 St Andrew's Street, in the city centre close to Lion Yard. As the name hints, the building began life as a cinema. Wetherspoon's own pub-history note says it was purpose built in 1937 as the Regal cinema, and that it later served as the ABC.

From cinema to pub

The pub opened in 2000, and the CAMRA listing says Wetherspoon then considered it the biggest pub in Britain; that claim has since been passed by newer Wetherspoon openings elsewhere. The pub fills two floors, and Arts Picturehouse still shows films in the rest of the same building. Large, open spaces dominate, though CAMRA notes a few quieter corners at the edges and an outdoor area at the back.

Drink and food

Wetherspoon pubs take orders through the company app and pay for food and drink at the table. the 2017 CAMRA survey counted four regular ales and a changing choice of guests, with Weston's and Gwynt y Ddraig ciders. Wetherspoon runs beer festivals in the pub; the one in October 2026 runs from 7 to 18 October. The pub page lists music, step-free access, a licensed outside area, TV screens and Wi-Fi.

Practical notes

The Regal opens at 8am every day. It closes at 1am Sunday to Thursday and at 2am on Friday and Saturday. Children under 18 can only be in the pub between 8am and 8pm. The phone number is 01223 366459.
