St John the Evangelist
A Hills Road parish church that grew from a daughter church of 1892, with services each Sunday and a choir.
St John the Evangelist is a parish church of the Church of England on the corner of Hills Road and Blinco Grove, serving the housing that spread out towards Cherry Hinton Road. Its own website describes it as a parish church "aspiring to be a transforming Christian presence" and a welcoming, diverse community.
A daughter church of Cherry Hinton
The church began in 1892 as an offshoot of St Andrew's Church in Cherry Hinton, set up to serve the new suburb then growing up beside Hills Road. Early services took place in the chapel of Homerton College, and a committee of local residents and university people raised money for a building, chaired by the Master of Peterhouse. The first stage of the church was usable by the end of 1897. The choir and clergy vestries followed in 1909, the west end was finished in 1929, and a parish room added on the south side in 1982 was extended into community rooms and a new entrance area in 1995.
What happens here
Services are held each Sunday morning and evening, plus a Wednesday morning Holy Communion, and a choir sings in the English choral tradition. There is also evensong with the Homerton College Charter Choir, a Children's Church for 4 to 11 year olds on Sunday mornings, and an all-age service on the first Sunday of each month.
Practical notes
Newcomers are greeted at the door and given a service booklet and hymn book, and tea or coffee is served after the Sunday morning service. The church has step-free access through powered double doors and an accessible toilet. It has a small car park, and the church notes free parking on Sundays in the surrounding streets. Check the church website for current service times and events.
