Castle Street Methodist Church
A Grade II listed Methodist church of 1914 on Castle Street, with a 1929 Binns organ and a chapel history back to 1823.
Castle Street Methodist Church is one of the thirteen congregations of the Cambridge Methodist Circuit and a working church. The Grade II listed building dates from 1914.
A century of rebuilding
The Methodist story on this site began with Primitive Methodists, who converted a cottage into the first church. A purpose-built chapel followed in 1823, and was rebuilt in 1841 and again in 1863. The 1914 building was a fresh start, drawn up by the architect Augustus Frederic Scott. It was given Grade II listed status in 2003.
Organ and refurbishment
The church retains its original 1929 organ by Binns. A major refurbishment in 2010 improved accessibility, upgraded the sound system and added a new console for the organ, while the instrument itself was kept.
Practical notes
There is a 10:00 service each Sunday morning and an additional evening service once a month, on the second Sunday. Alongside Anglican and United Reformed neighbours it belongs to the Church at Castle partnership, and it stands close to Castle Mound. Check with the church for current service times before attending.
