Local's tip

Pair a visit with the Museum of Cambridge, directly opposite.

Soap & Clay is a shop on the corner of Northampton Street and Magdalene Street, at number 13, opposite the Museum of Cambridge. It sells artisan soap and bath products, and the clays that give the business half of its name are used in the products for what the shop calls a spa-quality experience.

What is sold

The in-house range includes soap bars, luxury bath products, shampoo bars, dog shampoo, eco cleaning products and candles, along with gift boxes and gift cards. The Cambridge shop also stocks pottery from local artists and a range of nature-inspired gifts. According to the shop, its goods are either made by the business itself, by local artists or within the UK, or are Fairtrade, and it describes itself as mostly plastic-free. Pottery began as a practical addition when the business realised customers needed soap dishes.

The street

The shop describes Magdalene Street as one of the earliest shopping streets in Cambridge, full of independent shops, and a few hundred yards from a popular punting spot at Bridge Street. That is the shop's own description, and the street carries on towards the Backs and the view of King's College.

Practical notes

The shop is closed on Mondays. It opens Tuesday to Friday from ten until half past five, Saturday from ten until six, and Sunday from eleven until four. Products can also be bought online. Phone 01223 660627.
