Fort St George
A timber-framed riverside pub on Midsummer Common, with parts dating from the 16th century.
Fort St George sits at the edge of Midsummer Common, looking over the River Cam. It is a Grade II listed, timber-framed building, and some of the structure goes back to the 1500s. The formal name is "Fort St George In England", usually shortened by locals to "the Fort". The name is said to reflect a supposed likeness to the East India Company stronghold of the same name in Madras, today's Chennai.
The building
Enlarged and reworked many times, the pub still keeps a snug beside the main entrance, where a guidebook admires the old panelling and tiled floor. It is often described as the oldest riverside pub on the Cam. The pub is run by Greene King, whose own description mentions a beer garden overlooking the river.
Practical notes
Greene King lists the pub as family-friendly and dog-friendly, with free Wi-Fi and disabled access. Opening hours on the company's page run from noon to 23:00 Monday to Saturday and noon to 22:00 on Sundays.
