A Year in Cambridge

The Cambridge calendar by season: festivals, races, fairs and fireworks, each with a link to its organiser for dates.

Each guide below says what an event is, where it happens and how it began, and links to the organiser for dates. Dates for a particular edition are not given here, because programmes change.

Winter

The Lent Bumps, a college rowing race on the Cam, take place at the end of February or the start of March; see the Bumps. The Mill Road Winter Fair closes part of Mill Road to traffic on the first Saturday in December. The Cambridge Literary Festival holds a Winter Festival.

Spring

The Cambridge Festival of talks, films and exhibitions is typically held in March, and the Literary Festival also holds a Spring Festival. The Cambridge Beer Festival on Jesus Green is held at the end of May.

Summer

Strawberry Fair fills Midsummer Common on the first Saturday in June. The May Bumps take place in mid-June, and May Week and the May Balls close the academic year. The Cambridge Folk Festival is held at Cherry Hinton Hall over a long weekend in summer.

Autumn

The Cambridge Film Festival takes place in autumn, and Fireworks Night on Midsummer Common is held in early November.
